NHA offers virtual professional development courses to help higher ed-based humanities scholars and practitioners develop humanities curricula, document the impact of humanities programs, and advocate for our field.

Each course also offers the opportunity for attendees to connect with others in similar roles or who are interested in similar topics to create a community of practice.

Attendees who complete a course will receive a certificate of completion from the National Humanities Alliance.

This course builds on our research documenting how humanities faculty have built applied interdisciplinary undergraduate programs that demonstrate the value of specific humanities disciplines and liberal arts education to skeptical students. It is designed for faculty and administrators interested in creating courses and programs that integrate the humanities with other fields of study to solve problems and strengthen pre-professional training. Participants will learn about the impact of successful models, processes for identifying relevant resources and partners, strategies for garnering support by aligning projects with institutional priorities, and protocols for facilitating a collaborative, interdisciplinary program development process. 

Each virtual session is offered once, from 1:00 -2:30 pm Eastern. Recordings will be available to participants for one month.

Workshop One: Overview of Our Research 

Monday 12/14 from 1:00-2:30 pm Eastern.

This workshop will provide an overview of NHA research on integrative and applied undergraduate courses, programs, and infrastructure. Participants will learn about a wide range of models that have helped students better appreciate the value of the humanities and motivated course-taking. They will discuss which models seem best suited to their respective campuses.

Workshop Two: Identifying Existing Courses, Relevant Resources, and Potential Partners

Tuesday 12/15 from 1:00-2:30 pm Eastern.

This workshop will help participants inventory existing courses, relevant resources, and potential partners on their campus to leverage in developing a new integrative/applied degree program. Participants will discuss strategies for connecting with colleagues to forge mutually beneficial partnerships. 

Workshop Three: Advocating for Support by Aligning with Institutional Priorities

Wednesday 12/16 from 1:00-2:30 pm Eastern.

This workshop will focus on strategies for advocating for concrete support to develop integrative and applied undergraduate programs. Participants will consider how they can align their efforts with strategic priorities to gain buy-in from key stakeholders inside and outside the institution. 

Workshop Four: Developing a Collaborative, Interdisciplinary Program Development Process

Thursday 12/17 from 1:00-2:30 pm Eastern.

This workshop will distill best practices in developing proposals and curriculum for new integrative degree programs. Participants will discuss how they might best structure a collaborative, interdisciplinary process on their campuses that is aligned with the potential partners and institutional priorities they’ve identified.
